Conquer evil with good

With the terrible loss of life this past week, we faithful should look to the great works of kindness and compassion that good people of many religions, races, and backgrounds have done to oppose evil deeds and words. We saw first responders risk their lives for others, strangers perform acts of heroism, and incredible personal sacrifice.

During times of crisis, hardship, and suffering, we should always remember that our Catholic faith can guide us.

"Do not be conquered by evil but conquer evil with good." - Romans 12:21

I hope that everyone in our council, parish and community can find acts of kindness and good deeds to overwhelm all lesser acts. Your council officers and directors work hard to create opportunities every month to put our faith into action.

On this day which celebrates the birth of a free nation, we should consider our good fortune of being an American with the freedom to practice our Catholic faith without fear of persecution. The Knights of Columbus instructs us to be heralds of Catholic faith and our country's unique freedoms.

Please remember these profound words that began the struggle to define our free nation:

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

On this Fourth of July, please pray with me for all the people in the world that they may be allowed to practice their faith without fear of persecution. And we should also pray for the safety and wise council of members of this nation's military and civil service branches, many of whom are far from their home and family on this special day.

Prayers for Umberto Norigenna's Mother "Carmela"had one of her legs amputated on Saturday Sept 8th.

Prayers for a close friend of the McGrath family who at 15 was diagnosed with Lupus, an autoimmune disease, that she will find the help and support to continue to live a normal and fruitful life.
 
Prayers for Tony Polermo and his family as they navigate his eventual discharge from the hospital after many weeks. Tony is still in the hospital and is not able to walk.  They moved him from Chapel Hill intensive care to Johnson Memorial and are waiting for an opening in the right rehab for him.  He has almost fully healed from his various surgeries and has color back in his face for the first time in 3 months.  Tony is now alert and looking forward to a full recovery.  He has lost over 100 pounds while in the hospital.

For our first responders and military who keep us all safe daily. May God continue to watch over and protect them, and their families.

Worthy Chaplains and Dear Brother Knights, 
The issues that have come to light concerning sexual abuse by Archbishop Theodore McCarrick and in the Pennsylvania Grand Jury Report are cause for grave concern among Catholics and Brother Knights. Many feel deeply betrayed by those whom they long held in high regard. Such concerns are shared not just in the United States, but in Europe, Latin America and elsewhere.

These sins of commission and omission have sent the Church we love, the Church we serve and the Church that Jesus Christ established into convulsions. Sadly, the disgrace not only is borne by the perpetrators, it hurts us all, as does the silence of shepherds who have ignored the cries of their flocks.

There are many wonderful and faithful laborers in the vineyard of the Lord among our priests and bishops. However, it is clear that in addition to devastating criminal acts, we have seen many other moral failings by clergy that represent a crisis of commitment to the Gospel. 
Too often the needs of victims have been subordinated to a distorted sense of mercy toward the perpetrators or an instinct for clerical self-preservation. The sexual acts — both criminal and non-criminal — highlight the need to recover a respect for and a renewed commitment to the priestly promises of celibacy.
 
The Knights of Columbus has supported the pastoral and charitable work of our bishops and priests since our founding by the Venerable Father Michael McGivney. We understand that the priest should lead the parish and the bishop should be the center of unity in a diocese.  But we — like all Catholics — are painfully aware of the wreckage that ensues when elements of this leadership are abdicated by evil actions whether directly perpetrated or covered up.

Now, the Knights of Columbus — laymen, priests and chaplains together — will have an important role to play in rebuilding the Church. We must commit the Knights of Columbus to work for repentance, reform and rebuilding of the Church.

Repentance should include a full accounting of the misdeeds by those who have committed them. Archbishop McCarrick and others at fault owe us a full account of their actions, motivations and cover-ups. After years of having us confess to them, it is now time for them to come clean about what they have done and what they have failed to do.

This will also help increase the recognition that clerical sexual abuse is a global problem that must be addressed at the highest levels of the Catholic Church. Moreover, priests and bishops who refuse to live according to their promises of celibacy should be removed from public ministry, not out of retribution, but for the protection of the faithful and to prevent future variations of the scandal we now suffer.

Reform must include many good ideas that have been proposed, such as a full and complete investigation of sexual abuse led by an independent commission that includes laity; complete transparency by the Catholic hierarchy into all matters of criminal sexual misconduct past or future; an expansion of the zero tolerance policy to include sexual activity or misconduct by clerics including bishops, and by seminarians; and a call for faithfulness by all members of the clergy, including bishops. There must also be an independent ethics hotline for reporting of criminal and other conduct at odds with Catholic teaching on the clerical state of life; and there must be protections against retaliation.
Such reforms will be difficult for a Church largely unused to them, and we must support our bishops and our priests in embracing these reforms in order to rebuild.

We can help to rebuild our Church in several ways. Above all else, Knights — and our chaplains — must embrace love of God and love of neighbor. This is Christ’s great commandment and the founding mission of our Order. It is also exactly the opposite of the rejection of God and exploitation of neighbor that our Church has witnessed in these scandals.

Shortly before becoming Pope Benedict XVI, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger decried the “filth” in the Church “even among those, who in the priesthood, ought to belong totally” to Christ. He also provided the antidote, stating at other times that what the Church needs now more than anything else is “saints.” Pope Francis reiterated Pope Benedict’s sentiments in his letter on Aug. 20.

In the days ahead, the Knights of Columbus will help renew our Church on a national level through a Novena of Masses in reparation for these sins that have so grievously wounded the Body of Christ. I take this opportunity to ask that you offer this Novena of Masses for our Church at your earliest opportunity.
 
Beginning in November, the Knights of Columbus will sponsor, in cooperation with the Shrine of St. Jean Vianney in Ars, France, a national tour of the relic of the heart of this great patron saint of priests. In the coming weeks, I will share more details with you about this initiative.

We will also continue to strengthen and rebuild our Church at the level of our families and parishes through our Building the Domestic Church program. Its twin elements of imbuing families with faith and strengthening parish life are critical to providing a Catholic Church that rebuilds based on the Gospel principles of love of God and love of neighbor. Together with our recently announced “Faith In Action” initiative, we will strive to make our parishes truly become, in the words of Pope Francis, “a family of families.”

Now is the time for all brother Knights to stand steadfast in faith, as Catholics and as gentlemen. We will assist priests, bishops and our fellow Catholics in helping the Church chart a course for the future that puts Christ at the center, so that truly we may say, “Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.”
This is the moment in which Knights — including in a special way our priest members — can be part of a great renewal for good in our Church. And as we strive to follow the Lord more closely in the days ahead, may he deliver us from every evil and in his mercy graciously grant his Church peace and unity.
In closing, know that your faithful witness and sacrifice can bring inspiration and hope to millions of your fellow Catholics. It will be needed in the days ahead more than ever before.  And to every priest and bishop whose commitment and dedication to our Order and to our Church has been faithful and exemplary, please accept my gratitude in both a personal way and on behalf of the Knights of Columbus.

Let each one of us prayerfully invoke the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, so that in the words of St. Maximilian Kolbe, our hearts would be cleansed and themselves become immaculate, similar and like unto her own heart.

Deacon John's Funeral Mass

Hello Brothers, Wives and Friends,


Some of you witnessed a beautiful funeral service honoring a beautiful man and friend, Deacon John Hubisz.  The funeral mass was presided by Msgr. John Wall, Father Staib and Deacon Joe along with about twelve priests and thirty Deacons. Fantastic Results on the new Fish Fry - Thank you

Fish Fry was a complete success!

 

By all measures we witness a small miracle on Friday night serving 746 meals averaging a meal every ten seconds.  Our profit looks very good at about $3,500.00.  We wil conduct a lessons learned and be ready for Friday night March 23rd.  Come out and join the fun.

Mike's Rota's d wife, Sue, had a serious medical event this week.  They are home from the hospital but full recovery will take time and healing.  

Prayers for my co-worker who was just diagnosed with a serious and rare brain cancer.  They are focused on short term health at the moment.  He is a husband a great father to two girls.

Prayers fro Regina McGrath, Paul McGrath's Mom who continues to battle multiple myeloma and a fractured spine (long story).  She was finished with her chemo treatment but learned this week that she is going back on treatment.

Hello Brothers, Wives and Friends,


As many of you know we were forced to cancel this Friday's fish fry.  We did not have a technical system and we chose to hold off on the supply.  That is the difficult news.

Here is where the strength of Unity and Fraternity of Council 7186 shines brightly.  Within moments of the news we have a team over ten Brothers, Wives and Friends assembled and diligently working on a new order system, a new website (lentfishfry.com is down and not available to our council) and a new organization system since the Wiki page is end of life.  This technical team is laser focused on getting up and running for March 9th.  I will keep you informed. 

"This could be the worst disaster in council 7186 ever experienced. 
With all due respect, I believe this is gonna be our finest hour."

Weekly update September 20

Hello Brothers, Wives and Friends,

Apex Music Fest was a Success!

Council 7186 was in full motion at the Apex Music Fest.  It was truly a team effort with wives, children and friends all helping out.  We started the day with a core team of five for the setup at 1:00 and finished up just after midnight.  WOW.  Our profits were just under 1700.00 for the day!

Last night nine of your knights met Jim Gilbowsky to assemble the large cross and test the large cross in various locations within the Chapel.  Pictures were taken and were sent to Father for a decision on location and potential adjustments to the over size.. 

Also last night, we met on the upcoming monthly pancake breakfast.  All logistics were discussed, agreed and confirmed.  Please look for a signup genius invite coming out soon.  Our first two will be Sunday October 8th after the 9:00 AM and 10:45 Masses.  This fundraiser is a community building event, meeting potential candidates and with proceeds going to the Church for the items that Father mentioned.  More on that later.

Weekly Update September 12

Hello Brothers, Wives and Friends,

We participated in a very successful Ministry Fair this past weekend.  The picture above are your very own (from left to right) Tom Blum - Deputy GK, Al Martin - Inside Guard, Umberto Norigenna - Associate GK, Bob Callaway - Church Director, Mike Erpenbach - Membership Director and Joe Mulvey Honary member with 37 years of service.  A special thank you to Tom, Mike and Dan Cantrel for creating our new poster for the fair.  It is beautiful and very functional.  Based on our efforts to date, we have over ten candidates interested in joining our council.  We are planning an Exemplification Monday Sept 25th at 7pm at STMM.

To celebrate the 100th anniversary of Fatima, a Rosary prayer group is being planned on Saturday October 14th at 12:00 PM by our very own State Church Director Jeff Hoffman.  The specific location in Apex is being finalized. The signup in the upcoming activity section below is for both volunteers to read a decade of the Rosary and for those that are attending. 

We still have a lot going on this month.  This weekend is the CPO Food Drive collection AND the Apex Music Festival.  We need the following help so please see the sign ups in the Activity Section and well ... Sign up!

Weekly Update September 05

Hello Brothers, Wives and Friends,

The picture above of our new Chapel is a beautiful image of our faith community coming together.  All the pieces of the physical campus of St Mary Magdalene are nearing their first stage of completeness.  We now have a great and wonderful task of reaching out and welcoming newcomers and former members to our parish.  The first opportunity for the Knights of Columbus is our Ministry Fair this weekend after each of the Masses.  Our DGK, Tom Blum, Chancellor Dan Cantrell and Membership Director, Mike Erpenbach have been working hard on a new display to help share our works.  We still need more help to man the table after each of the weekend Masses.  Please stop by our table and take a look and help share our story.

Our council's committee working on the memorial for the Unborn, Neglected and Abandoned is meeting with Father Staib and the Parish Council tonight, Wednesday September 6, to discuss our suggested designs, discuss potential locations and to understand the next steps in making this a reality.  We are very aware of the power this memorial will provide for those that are healing from any of the above.  We will keep you updated.

 

Important meeting announcement - We will meet in Room 1 in the new Church this Thursday!  As usual the financial review will occur at 7:00PM followed by the normal monthly meeting at 7:30.  Past GK Chris Hanes and I looked at the room which appears smaller than the Adult room but I was told it is actually larger.  We will find out on Thursday, so please come out and see.

Update Week August 22

Hello Brothers, Wives and Friends,

Our council is in full swing and working like a fine oiled machine!  There are a lot of events coming up in September that will give us even more opportunity to display what it means to be a Knight of Columbus.  I really appreciate each and every member and their families for your continued support of our work. 

September will be a busy month for us.  We have the opportunity to be part of our annual St Mary Magdalene Parish Ministry Fair on September 9th and 10th.  We will be present after each Mass to share with potential members the work we do and the impact we have made in our community.  Also on that weekend is the CPO food drive.  As previously announced, our council will be cooking at the Apex Music Fair on Saturday evening September 16th.  Everyone has enjoyed working this event.  Finally, we have our Adopt-A-Highway on Saturday morning September 23rd.  I will attach a sign up next week for each of these worthy events. 

We are also actively working with Father on the memorial for the unborn, forgotten and abused.  I will share more information once we finish our preparation and then presentation to Father and the parish council.  I do believe that this will become a reality during our fraternal year. 

The State Golf Tournament is at Tanglewood Country Club just outside of Winston Salem.  It would be great if we had a foursome or two to enter the tournament.  Please send me a note if you are interested in playing and if you are willing to coordinate our team(s).  Here is the information:

August 16th 2017 Update

Hello Brothers, Wives and Friends,

We had a wonderful turn out for our back to school picnic last Sunday.  As you can see from the picture above a constant stream of hungry students and parents visited our tent.  We raised $ 633.00 which will go toward the memorial for the Unborn, Forgotten and Abuses.  Special thanks to the team that came out to set up, cook and clean up for this very worthy community event. 

Our immediate Past Grand Knight Chris Hanes suggested that I inform to read past our Grand Knight message as I am using the upcoming activities section below for announcements and help.  In the past Chris embedded those events into his overall message.  Actually, let me know how you prefer to stay current.  To that end, we will be leveraging our public website:  www.kofc7186.org so that potential members can read up on our activities, view pictures, etc.  

One of our new members recently commented to me that our council is young, vibrant and warming.  He is glad he had the chance to transfer to our council from Greenville SC.  Speaking of him, please welcome fourth degree knight Sir Jason Horner (pictured above in the red shirt) and his family.  It is our pleasure to have him as he quickly jumped in and helped out at the back to school picnic!

Grand Knight's Message

Hello, Brothers and Friends!

Our Worthy Supreme Council and Worthy State Officers are currently at the Supreme convention laying out the plans for the 2017 - 2018 fraternal year.  Led by Supreme Knight Carl Anderson, he delivered a message of 'Convinced of God's Love and Power.  Our own council is driven by these some powerful words.  

Last night, Tuesday August 01, your newly elected officers met to discuss plans for our upcoming year.  The meeting was attended by ten of your brothers engaged in spirited conversation with a joint conviction to make a difference in our own community.  You will hear more about the plans/changes at our monthly business meeting this Thursday August 03.  A few summary points:

  • New Knights of Columbus council 7186 shirts to be made available (ie no charge) to all people volunteering at our functions.
  • All new members to receive a council shirt as described above
  • Plans underway for a meal event after each mass at least once a month
  • New plans to re-engage our fellow brothers and to seek new members
  • We need more volunteers to fill Director and Org Chart positions
  • Re-engage our commitment to the new sculpture for "the unborn, forgotten and abused"

As a united fraternal organization, we will make a difference, your leadership team of Officers and Directors have committed to a great year and now we need each one of you to come together in unity!

Dedication of our New Church

Hello, Brothers and Friends!

We had an absolute beautiful Dedication Ceremony that was attended by over 1500 parishioners and friends.  The Ceremony and Mass was celebrated by Bishop Elect of Atlanta,
Bishop-designate Shlesinger, and various Pastors including Monsignor John Wall.  I personally was overwhelmed whenBishop-designate Shlesinger said "Father Staib unlock the doors to your Church".

The moment was a culmination of the vision of the late Bishop Gossman and kept moving through the hard work of Father Staib.  He led our Parish Community in a very calm and reverent manner over the past sixteen years and many felt that our new Church is a gift from God for his hard work and love.

I hope everyone has had a chance to visit our new Church and feel the power of our faith community alive and well in the beauty of St. Mary Magdalene Church!  We celebrated new life this past weekend with nine Baptisms! 

We have a few items coming up this weekend.  Friday evening is the rain-out makeup game at the Holly Springs Salamanders.  The signup is filling up so please see the following link and come out for some fun.  Thanks again to IPGK Chris Hanes for organizing the first outing and for ensuring that we received tickets to Friday's game.

October comes to a close

Hello, Brothers!

We have a couple upcoming activities this weekend and our monthly meeting next Thursday.  I will be out of town the next few days so I hope to hear things went well in my absence.  Our attendance drawing is up to $120 so if you haven’t been to a meeting in a while you should really consider coming out.  We ended before 8:30 last month and expect to have a relatively short meeting again this month as well. 

Our second Wives’ Appreciation Night of the year is Friday, October 28th from 6:00-8:00PM at Apex Fine Wine.  Thank you to Brother Eric Stokes for hosting us!  This will be a great opportunity to hang out with other couples, show appreciation to our lovely wives, drink some fine wine, and eat some light appetizers.  The tasting is covered by the Council but tipping the staff is greatly appreciated.  Please RSVP here
 
Our Fall Adopt-A-Highway make-up event is this Saturday October 29th!   Please Sign uphere.   Plan to meet at Olive Chapel Elementary School (1751 Olive Chapel Rd, Apex, NC 27502) at 8:30 AM.  Children must be 12 years old to participate.  Please consider participating in this truly local opportunity, literally just down the street!  As usual, drinks and snacks will be provided.  Bags, gloves, vests, and sticks to pick up trash will also be available.  If you have not yet volunteered for Adopt-A-Highway, please watch the Adopt a Highway Safety Video Clip  
 
The STMM Music Ministry plays a critical role in making the gym feel like a church and they need our help to make the new church feel like a cathedral when it opens!  We are sponsoring a fundraising dinner and concert, STMM Christmas Jam, on Saturday, December 10th 2016, 6:00 – 9:00PM.  Dinner will be served in the cafeteria from 6:00 to 7:15 and the concert will start at 7:30 in the gym.  ALL PROCEEDS will BENEFIT the STMM Music Ministry.  Through sales of dinner and concert tickets, raffle tickets, and tax deductible donations, we hope to raise over $25,000 to put toward the purchase of a grand piano and other much needed Music Ministry resources.  Please check out the Christmas Jam flyer here.  We need volunteers to sell tickets and collect donations after all Masses leading up to the Christmas Jam.  Please sign up here.

We are sponsoring a blood drive on Saturday, November 19th at STMM.  Our numbers have been down the last few blood drives and if we do not meet the required number of 30 donors this may be the last blood drive for our parish due to Rex’s expenses.  Please donate if possible and get the word out so we can continue sponsoring this important cause.
 
In closing, as October and Respect Life Month comes to an end, our Culture of Life Director, Paul Mastropolo, asked me to pass along a video.  We know politics and religion can get dicey so, fair warning, the priest in the video boldly talks about the importance of respect life in the upcoming election.  We ask those of you not easily offended to please consider watching :)  Regardless of your beliefs or politics I ask you all to please go out and vote.  Thank you and have a great week!
